a beautiful struggle

Reading the story of David and Goliath, it all seems so simple…
He used the tools and skills that God had developed in him over the years and he had faith that in the end everything would turn out okay. But was it really that easy?

In hindsight, the obstacles in life can sometimes seem simple. The mountain is SO impossibly steep until we reach that point when we finally get to the top.  For a little while we remember and have an incredibly easy time encouraging others through their struggles. And then somehow it turns into something simple, perhaps even trite.

I never want to forget the struggles I have gone through, the Goliath’s I have beaten, in order to get where I am today. I never want to give a trite answer to a friend who is feeling heartbroken or hopeless.  (I’m sorry to say that I have — hopefully that doesn’t happen anymore.)

Maybe it seems like she might need a verse (like the one that finally sunk into my heart after three years of trying to believe)…

But probably what she really needs is a shoulder to cry on.

Probably she needs an unconditional ear that is willing to listen and not judge, no matter she might say.

Probably she needs to be reminded that she is precious and has valuable thoughts and opinions.

Probably she needs to be reminded that she is worthy of love, that she is capable and that she is much smarter than she thinks.

Probably she needs to be pursued and wanted in friendship — even on the days when she’s not a lot of fun to be around.

Probably she needs to be encouraged and reminded that she is strong, courageous and full of faith.

Probably she needs the offer of a hand to hold as she traverses the rocky path until she finally finds the right stone to put into her sling and launch at her Goliath, finally reaching the top of the mountain she has battled to climb… A beautiful struggle.
